This year’s Ironman 70.3 Pays d’Aix looked like it would be a slam-dunk for British female pros like Lucy Gossage and Susie Cheetham, but in the event none of the five named on the starters’ list raced.

Gossage tells 220 that she pulled out a few weeks before the race due to accommodation issues, while Cheetham was forced to pull out after picking up a heavy cold after Ironman South Africa.

Hungary’s Gabriella Zelinka won the women’s race, with Alexandra Tondeur (BEL) and Camilla Pedersen (DEN) rounding out the podium. British age-grouper Kim Morrison came an impressive tenth.

In the men’s race, Andi Boecherer (GER) took gold in 3:57:21, with compatriot Boris Stein and the Czech Republic’s Jan Van Berkel taking silver and bronze.

Britain’s Ritchie Nicholls took fourth place with the day’s fastest run (1:14:08), and Fraser Cartmell came 13th.
