Spin XLR38 clinchers – review

With a 25mm rim width that gives a chunky profile reminiscent of Zipp or Enve and a toroidal shape a bit like the old 404s, Spin have clearly put some thought into their XLR38 carbon clinchers.

Along with 38mm deep rims, the whole lot weighs in pretty close to the claimed 1,465g. Better than that, the set comes with a £990 RRP, so they’ll set you back half as much as the aforementioned bigger names.

We were suitably impressed with their stiffness and response to acceleration and, once up to speed, they rolled along very nicely indeed. Having said that, the ride is a little harsher than we’d expected, but given that these aren’t designed with a casual ride in mind that’s not necessarily a huge issue.

In the dry, braking with the supplied blue pads was perfectly adequate and displayed none of the inconsistent ‘bityness’ which characterises poor braking. And in the wet, braking was certainly no worse than almost any other set of carbon clinchers we’ve tested.
