Salomon Speedcross 3 CS

With a slightly bulky appearance, the 347g weight is quite a surprise and certainly impressive for a shoe that’s designed with winter trail conditions in mind. They perform well on non-technical terrain but you can feel a bit of squirm from the lugged sole on the road.

The ultra-aggressive outsole shines once off the tarmac, and being lugged right up and over the toe makes for efficient climbing on steep terrain. They give 100% confidence descending but there’s a bit of foot roll when contouring.

Again we have caveats about the pros and cons of waterproofing, but we reckon these shoes would be fantastic in the snow with the membrane extending over the tongue.

The lacing system evokes a Marmite reaction with some struggling to get the tension right, but for fast transitions in winter off-road duathlons it’d be ideal.
