RSP Asteri 3

Although a neat little unit, the Asteri is surprisingly heavy. But considering it has no external power pack, has a tough waterproof alloy casing and delivers more than the claimed 5hrs at full beam, this can be forgiven.

The beam provides good penetration, range and a reasonable flood. It sails through urban commutes, where you only really need the low and flashing settings, and once in the wilds, full power sees you through the lanes okay.

It comes up short for full-paced training rides on unlit roads, though, and would need to be paired with a second light for session quality and safety.

Ease of fitting and removal and an impressively short charging time of 2.5hrs from fully drained make it a strong contender for commuters. It’s a real shame its price has jumped by £10 since 2010 but it still represents good value for money.
