Pioneer has unveiled a new version of its bike power meter which thankfully no longer needs zip ties to hold the unit onto the Shimano crankset spider, with complete integrated Dura-Ace and Ultegra cranksets now available.
Previously called the Pedaling Monitor System, Pioneer's Power Meter is accompanied by a new black-and-white head unit that graphically displays left and right power at 12 points along the pedal stroke, including each leg’s power output, pedalling efficiency, power loss, torque and force angle.
It achieves this using six independent sensors (three located on each side of the crank), with the data fed to the head unit via a special ANT+ stream. Claimed accuracy is +/-2 percent, in line with rival power meters such as the Power2Meter Rotor 3D Plus system and Garmin Vector pedals.
The new version runs on two CR2032 batteries with a claimed battery life of up to 120 hours, and adds 66g to Shimano cranks. It also comes as a fully integrated crankset, with Dura-Ace and Ultegra versions available.
Price will be $1,850 for the Dura-Ace 9000 version and $1,550 for the Ultegra 6800 option when it launches mid-March, while the new monochrome display head unit will retail for $300. The original head unit with colour display will still be available for $900.
