Amongst the more expensive shoes we've recently tested, the Exustar is equipped with a high-quality and very stiff carbon sole. But this is where the positives end.

The shoe’s been lined for sockless use, but where this adheres to the stiff synthetic outer it becomes very rough. This, in turn, makes for a painful riding experience. The join between the mesh liner and the stiff outer then makes for some sharp and obtrusive edges that cause blisters when cycling. Another flaw is the main strap undoes to the inside so, if you have your shoes pre-clipped in, there’ll be a lot of tangling with the crank.

The heel loop is so small that it’s near impossible to get your finger in quickly, and the sides tend to pinch the top of your foot when you tighten them also. One saving grace is that they’re quite easy to get on!
