On Cloud running shoes review

Swiss brand On is famous for its podular outsole, designed to absorb stress before releasing that stored energy to maximise toe-off. Many (including current Hawaii champ Frederick Van Lierde) have enjoyed the comfort it elicits; others have felt it a touch firm.

That’s changed with the Cloud (243g) as it guides you to one of the comfiest, fastest rides we’ve tested recently. It’s a 6mm drop from heel to toe, thanks to the very springy ‘Zero Gravity’ foam. Increasingly shoes wear their tech on the outside – here the exterior heelstrap purports to adjust to the movement of your foot.

We’re sceptical, but it’s certainly a fine fit. Elastic laces complete an impressive package. We do still have concerns, though, about stones forcing their way into that podular design and upsetting the ride.
