This year’s Abu Dhabi Triathlon has sold out of all 2,400 race slots for the first time in its (admittedly short) history, with British athletes Alistair and Jonny Brownlee and Ironman world champion Frederik Van Lierde among those confirmed to race next week.
The race marks the Brownlees’ first competitive triathlon of 2014 and Jonny’s first long-distance one of his career, where he will race older brother Alistair in the 1.5km/100km/10km short course event.
Other big names racing on March 15 include Melissa Hauschildt (AUS), who won last year’s long course event, and Tyler Butterfield (BER), who came second in the men’s event. The long course involves a 3km swim in the waters off Abu Dhabi’s public beach, followed by a 200km bike to Yas Island and around the Yas Marina F1 circuit, finishing with a 20km run back to the city centre.
Abu Dhabi Triathlon has been running since 2012, and this year’s race has attracted athletes from countries as diverse as Russia, Portugal, the Philippines, Brazil, South Africa, Japan and Finland, according to the organisers.
