Taking place alongside the quartet of triathlons is an excellent choice of single-discipline races. For the runners there’s a half marathon, a 10km and a 1.5km fun run. Open-water swimmers can take their pick from three distances: 750m, 3km and 5km. While for the cyclists there’s a 100km sportive. The courses have been carefully thought out to provide the right level of challenge for every type of competitor. For example, transition is ideally designed – it’s just 50m from the swim exit and even less to the bike mount line, so little time is lost transitioning. The swim legs are in the beautiful Stanborough south lake, whose water quality far exceeds European standards; the bike courses quickly take competitors out on to the quiet roads of the Hertfordshire countryside, which provides a good mix of hills and long fast straights; while the run courses are all within the park boundaries (the middle distance strays slightly onto dedicated cycle paths).
Stanborough Park, just off junction 4 of the A1, is a doddle to reach. Once there you can, almost, literally park on the start line. Marshalling is provided by Royal Marine Cadets, while on-site facilities include toilets, showers and catering. In short, the ideal setting for a thoroughly great day out.
