Polar CS400

Polar pretty much started the whole cardiac strap revolution. No surprise then that the soft strap ‘Wearlink’ coded HR belt is extremely comfortable and consistently in contact.

The zip-tied head unit is easy to attach on flat or round bars or stems, and the bridge attachment makes fork fitting easy. Display and operation are easy to read and intuitive to work, and although the sealed button’s a bit stiff to squeeze with winter gloves, they at least ‘peep’ when you’ve managed it.

Where Polar score is the simply massive array of data-recording options. All this is backed up by Polar’s excellent Pro Trainer 5 software, but you’re going to have to really know your onions to feel worthy of what it can tell you. And cadence and power sensors are sold separately, which elevates the already steep price even higher.
