Camelbak Racebak

Wicking base layers are a godsend and Camelbak bladders make hydration on the move simple. Combine the two and you should have a winner, right? Well… almost.

The first problem was getting it on with the full bladder in place. It wasn’t easy without assistance – not great if you train on your own. Out on the run, although the vest fitted well, there was more bounce than my regular pack and I missed having somewhere to put all my bits and pieces. Also, unlike a pack or bum-bag that can be used daily, the base layer would require washing after every session.

But training on my low-pro bike was a different story. The Racebak was designed with time-trialling in mind and it was a joy to use when tucked down on my aerobars. It’ll definitely win friends among the ‘dawn gatherings on A-roads’ brigade, but its non-tri race-specificity and ‘running bounce’ means it just won’t click with the vast majority of triathletes.
