Inov8 Windshell FZ Women’s review: “unmatched comfort and functionality”
Would you add a pure windshell jacket to your run wardrobe? Our tester was pleasantly surprised by the utility and weatherproofing offered by the Inov8 Windshell – and here's why you should be too!
220 Triathlon Verdict
A supremely lightweight and high-quality running windshell that does the job beautifully.
Pros
- Extremely lightweight, barely-there feel
- Effective wind-blocker
- Great athletic, woman-specific fit
- Useful run-specific features (chest clip, hood clip, part-elasticated sleeves)
Cons
- No pocket to pack down into
- Hood doesn’t provide much frontal coverage
The Women’s Windshell Full-Zip Jacket from Inov8 is designed to block out wind without compromising on performance. As soon as I donned the running jacket, I was immediately struck by how extremely lightweight it is, so much so that you hardly feel that you’re wearing it. No wonder, then, that on my scales it comes in at a mere 78g (2.75oz). There’s no waterproofing or insulative materials involved – this is a windshell, pure and simple.
How we test run jackets
Our team of 220 Triathlon expert reviewers have over 20 years of testing experience between them. Running jackets were tested in the UK in different weather conditions and temperatures to assess comfort, weatherproofing, performance, breathability, durability, value for money and run-specific features, like pockets and a secure hood. For more details, see how we rate and test products.
Design and features

Saying that, the Windshell has some subtle yet supremely effective run-specific features. The little built-in press stud at the chest is easy to secure while running and means you can run unzipped for extra airflow during warmer temperatures. Meanwhile, another clip on the hood allows you to roll and tuck it away when not in use, avoiding any unnecessary flapping and drag.
Then, there’s the fit. The Windshell provides a relatively slimline fit, with loose elastication at the lower hem and the cuffs to cinch out any draughts. There’s enough room to easily fit a thin long-sleeve layer underneath for colder run sessions, too. The women’s UK10 on test fit true to size (it would be nice to see more inclusive size options for sizes above UK16 though).
Performance and windproofing

Despite its feather-light build, the jacket does a great job at protecting from the elements. It’s in the name, but the windproofing is top-notch and there’s also some protection against light rain. The jacket sports thumb loops for extra coverage, plus a hood that stays in place well while running thanks to side elastication and a high neckline. Like the Keela jacket also tested, the hood’s main use is as another layer for warmth, since it doesn’t extend over enough of the forehead to cover the eyes from gusts or drizzle (non ponytail wearers may fare better here, though).
Keeping up the theme of simple yet effective, the jacket only has one zip pocket located at the chest. It’s smartphone sized and there’s an in-built key loop, but you wouldn’t want to stash anything weighty inside as it would just bounce around. The whole jacket easily packs into this integral pocket when not in use, just a shame there’s no reverse zip to properly secure it shut.
The bottom line

Overall, I was really impressed by Inov8’s Windshell as a springtime running jacket. It hits that balance between protection and breathability better than any jacket I’ve tested. It’s a great inter-season layer to take on whatever the unpredictable British weather throws at you. I was on the fence as to the place of a non-waterproof windshell in a runner’s wardrobe, but I can now absolutely see the appeal. Comfort and functionality are unmatched.
