First look: Red 2-in-1 Reversible Swim Tow Float Dry Bag Backpack

220 Triathlon Verdict

I’m yet to finish my testing of this new tow float backpack so no rating yet – but initial impressions are good and this feels like a sturdy, versatile product for adventures over land and water.

Pros

  • Versatile for adventures
  • Feels very well made
  • Safety features included

Cons

  • Premium price point

Most open-water swimmers will be well aware of the need to use a tow float in open water for visibility and safety. But what if you want something that allows you to go a little further? My first look at the new Red 2-in-1 Reversible Swim Tow Flost Dry Bag Backpack suggests it could be just the thing for the job.

Admittedly, I’m a sucker for an adventure over land and water and as such have tried out a few floating bags over the years, including tow float options with straps and even an inflatable mini raft that turns into a backpack.

I have to say though, Red’s ingenious new tow float/dry bag is the first one I’ve seen that turns inside out to perform its different functions. One way it’s an eye-catching bright yellow tow float, the other way it’s a more muted dark blue drybag.

First impressions are good here. The whole thing feels solidly made and good quality, which I like for adventures in the wild as well as longevity. The idea is that you put your kit inside the ‘tow float’ for swimming, then when you get to shore, pull it out, reverse the float using a handy pull handle and put it back in to carry it like a rucksack.

The only thing I’d say to bear in mind with this design is that you might want to let the float dry before you turn it inside out and use it as a bag – otherwise you could end up with some soggy kit (unless of course you’re just stashing your already-red swim kit inside it which is the most likely use).

The tow float strap is attached right on the front, which looks like it could potentially reduce drag, but that’s something I’ll explore in testing. There’s also a whistle for safety and a mesh front pocket with Velcro fastening. It’s not a waterproof pocket so you’ll need to add an additional waterproof case for anything non-waterproof you want to put in it, but to my mind it’s perfect for mid-swim snacks and easily fits a couple of gels.
