Inov8 continue to design running shoes that are for the serious runner and the Trailfly Speed V2 is no exception. Designed for speed and quick foot turnover, the Trailfly Speed V2 is ideal for those who want to run fast and push the pace.
This latest version sees major upgrades to its outsole, midsole, and upper, and the enhanced G-Grip rubber sole hopes to deliver even more of the grip that Inov8 is known for.
How we test running shoes
Each running shoe we review gets put through the same level of testing, including numerous runs of varying distances over the period of several weeks at a minimum. This includes long, slow runs, plus faster tempo efforts or interval sessions. We test against a range of criteria including comfort, breathability, support, stability, ride, propulsion and value. For more details, see how we rate and test products.
Construction and the finer details
With a 4mm drop, this shoe is built for runners who are used to a relatively low drop and enjoy the feeling of connectedness to the trail that this brings. If you are used to a more cushioned, less responsive ride, this shoe will feel different. The trade-off is enhanced feedback and energy return with each step—ideal for runners who want responsiveness over plush comfort.
Ultimately, it can come down to your running style, with the Trailfly Speed V2 suiting a more dynamic, midfoot-focused runner that is light on their feet—but having said that, a shoe can help encourage good technique.
The 6mm Boomerang footbed adds a welcome layer of cushioning without sacrificing responsiveness. The asymmetric lacing system holds the foot securely in place, especially around the ankle and midfoot. This locked-in feel is exactly what I want for fast running, and the first thing I noticed was that these shoes felt like they were part of my feet.
Run feel

The Trailfly Speed V2, like all of the Inov8 range, benefits from the updated anatomical last, helping the shoe contour more naturally to the foot and meaning our feet can work exactly as nature intended. It felt comfortable, and at the same time, this is not a shoe that offers extra padding around the ankle or tongue like other trail running shoes.
A reinforced toe box and protective toe bumper mean that my toes are protected from rocks and toe stubbing. A heel loop makes it easy to slip on and off and is a necessary feature in my experience.
Despite being positioned as a fast shoe, it sits slightly on the heavier side for its category at 299g (10.5oz). However, it felt light and nimble on my foot, thanks to its flexibility and ground connection. The shoe is very flexible across the forefoot, allowing for a strong range of motion and natural foot movement. With a 21mm stack, much less than similarly positioned shoes, this shoe is a welcome outlier in the fast running category.
Overall verdict
The Trailfly Speed V2 excelled on my rockier runs and was very happy taking in the odd tarmac road. Whilst the grip was pretty good in muddy conditions, I would save them for drier trail runs. This turquoise shown is the only women’s colour; men can choose from blue or fluro green.
