Decathlon Kiprun 900 Rain review: “great value waterproof run layer that strikes a difficult balance”

Decathlon’s Kiprun 900 Rain is a running jacket designed to be both highly waterproof and breathable. As all runners will attest, this is a very difficult balance to strike. But Decathlon has once again proven with the Kiprun that budget doesn’t have to equal basic.

Weatherproofing and design

Firstly, the Kiprun’s waterproofing is not to be sniffed at. The 20,000 hydrostatic head (plus taped seams) equates to all-weather use and sure enough, the jacket kept me dry even while running in sustained downpours. The hood, though less impressive, also does the job. Like the other jackets on test, the Kiprun’s hood is not adjustable. It does have side elastication and a high neckline though, which do a good job of keeping it in place. Side to side movement is pretty uninhibited, so it’s easy to spot side traffic or obstacles while running. There’s little in the way of a visor though, so the forehead and eyes don’t get much coverage from the elements. 

Despite the heavy-duty waterproofing, the jacket remains remarkably breathable. The coat’s thin and stretchy 2.5-layer membrane is paired with ventilation channels along the upper back and underarms. These are envelope-style openings that allow airflow out, but no rain in. Thanks to the chest clip, which allows the jacket to stay secured at the front while completely unzipped, I was able to run with it in temperatures up to 18°C without overheating. 

Fit and performance

Fit is where this run jacket differs from others tested. The fit is less athletic, with more space underneath to fit additional run layers. Despite following Decathlon’s sizing recommendations (which take into account height, weight and chest size), I found the jacket a little baggy for my tastes, particularly when it came to the length in the body and sleeves. Some runners will surely appreciate the extra coverage that comes with this cut though. There’s no elastication at the hem but the longer length made it more fitted to the hips, which stuck it in place and blocked out any unwanted draughts. The sleeves are secured with part elastication and part Velcro. 

Finally, two large side pockets are handy and can fit a lot of gear when not running, and also make the jacket a more versatile option for hiking and day-to-day use. The jacket also stashes down into either one of these pouches for easier storage. Overall, I found the Kiprun to be a super functional, relatively lightweight, and great value waterproof run layer that strikes a difficult balance between weather protection and run breathability.
