The stage is set for the men’s 2020 Olympic race here in Tokyo Bay
Game face already on. GB’s podium hopeful, 23-year-old Alex Yee lines up on the start pontoon.
After a false start where a RIB was partially obstructing the pontoon, the men dive into the water for their first 950m lap.
It’s a messy and choppy field with the men scrapping for the sharpest line around the buoys.
Cameramen in position. An Aussie exit sees the men scramble out the water and dive back in between the 950m and 550m lap.
Vincent Luis leads the swim and is first into T1. Podium hopeful, he’ll later finish 13th.
Jonny Brownlee is 8th in the lead swim pack and well positioned coming out of T1.
Futuristic sights greet the men along the course in Odaiba Park, Tokyo.
Focus on, Jonny sticks to the front bike pack on the technical 8x5km lap course.
The chase pack catches the leaders and it’s still all to play for at the end of the swift 40km bike.
Brit Alex Yee instantly takes the front on the run and sets the pace, but can he keep it up?
Passing the halfway point and Yee is still in control, with Jonny hanging on at the back.
Three frontrunners have split from the pack, with Yee battling to keep the lead from Norway’s Kristian Blummenfelt and NZ’s Haydn Wilde.
Last 200m and it’s the moment of realisation from Blummenfelt, he broken off the front and powered to victory.
