Jeanne Lehair broke away from Georgia Taylor-Brown on the final run leg to win the Chicago Supertri while Alberto Gonzales Garcia secured a double for Podium Racing by dominating the men’s race.

Lehair, the 29-year-old Luxembourger, took her third Supertri triumph after finishing second to Taylor-Brown in last year’s overall standings. In third place was Brownlee Racing’s 17-year-old Fanni Szalai in a breakthrough race for the Hungarian.

Behind Gonzales Garcia, who led the race from the first bike leg, Tyler Mislawchuk of Crown Racing (six seconds back) and John Reid (a further 14 seconds behind), also of Podium Racing, completed the men’s podium.

What happened in the women’s race?

Stage 1

Szalai left the water first out of a large bunch, benefitting from the Short Chute, and was accompanied by Zuzana Michalickova before a chasing pack of 12 caught them before T2.

After Lehair took the Short Chute, she led by eight seconds at the end of the first run.

Stage 2

This gap had reduced to three seconds by the end of the second swim before a lead group of six including Taylor-Brown formed on the bike.

Their teams allocated Short Chutes to Lehair and Taylor-Brown and the front pack became five athletes after the mile-long run.

Stage 3

A fast transition enabled Lehair to start the swim first and she was also the first of the front five to clip into her bike after the final 300m swim in Lake Michigan.

Taylor-Brown closed a small gap to Lehair and the leaders raced conservatively ahead of the final run.

Another brisk transition by Miriam Casillas Garcia gave her the lead in but Lehair swiftly moved past her and increased her advantage over everyone until the finish.

The result places Lehair at the top of the women’s league standings with 26 points, two more than Taylor-Brown in second and 11 more than Rosia Maria Tapia Vidal in third.

Stage 1

Brownlee Racing’s Marcus Dey received the Short Chute having led the swimmers out of the water followed by Gonzales Garcia on to the bike.

They stayed ahead with a 16-second advantage then the Spaniard took the next Short Chute. He maintained the gap on the run ahead of a chasing pack that had swallowed Dey.

Stage 2

Despite efforts by the Stars and Stripes racer Márton Kropkó on the bike, Gonzales Garcia added to his lead from the second swim and held it steady on the run.

Behind, a crash caused by Morgan Pearson nearly downed the whole field in T2.

Stage 3

Mislawchuk ate away at Gonzales Garcia’s advance on the final swim but the 27-year-old still had 27 seconds over the chasers after the final 4km bike.

In second and third were Mislawchuk and Reid trailed by Jonny Brownlee who must have been ruing the elimination of several teammates, who fell 90 seconds behind the flying Spaniard.

Mislawchuk cut Gonzales Garcia’s lead to six seconds by the end of the last run to finish second in front of Reid.

The podium placings replicate the overall men’s rankings, except that Mislawchuk and Ricardo Batista are tied for fourth on 22 points, five behind Gonzales Garcia.
