Supertri is a dynamic triathlon format trying to turn the traditional swim, bike, run sequence into a faster, more spectator-friendly and engaging spectacle.

It encompasses professional league racing and mass participation events for amateur athletes.

Formerly known as Super League Triathlon, the organisation rebranded to Supertri to unify its various racing platforms.

The name change also saw more events held in North America and a short-lived switch to a single racing format.

For 2025, Supertri has returned to two formats and more teams have joined, including one led by Jonny Brownlee

Supertri is made up of three parts:

  • Supertri League: This is a team-based championship series held in city locations around the world. The league attracts the world’s top triathletes who compete for both individual glory and team points. The racing is characterised by its short and intense formats, often involving multiple stages with little to no break, forcing athletes to showcase their speed, skill, and tactics
  • Supertri E (formerly Arena Games): Fusing real-life and virtual racing, Supertri E is novel in triathlon. Athletes swim in a pool then transition to stationary bikes and treadmills, their efforts powering avatars in an indoor cycling / running app. This format allows for stadium viewing and provides detailed performance data for both athletes and spectators
  • By Supertri: This is the mass participation arm of the organisation, offering amateur triathletes the chance to compete on similar courses and be part of the larger festival atmosphere

Supertri has shaken things up in triathlon racing with its punchy distances, dual formats and team dynamic.

Short and sharp distances

Races are significantly shorter than traditional triathlon distances, often featuring a 300m swim, a 4km-5km bike, and a 1.6km-2km run. Athletes do each discipline three times. This makes the action fast-paced and easy to follow.

Multiple race formats

Supertri has a variety of formats to keep the racing entertaining.

The standard Supertri format sees athletes race the three stages (300m swim, 4km bike and 1.6km run) back-to-back.

In the Supertri Eliminator format, there is a short break between each stage for the athletes to reset their equipment.

The last two athletes to finish stage 1 and 2 get eliminated.

For stage 3, the remaining athletes’ combined time for the previous stages determines their starting order.

The 90-second rule is in force in both racing formats. This eliminates all athletes who drop 90 seconds behind the leader on each lap. The idea is to prevent lapping.

Team competition

The Supertri League features a team franchise model, adding a strategic element to the racing.

The 2025 teams are

  • Podium Racing – Léonie Périault, Kenji Nener
  • Crown Racing – Georgia Taylor-Brown, Cassandre Beaugrand
  • Brownlee Racing – Jonny Brownlee, Alex Yee, Jolien Vermeylen
  • Stars and Stripes Racing – a mix of elite and emerging Americans

Team managers make tactical decisions, such as which athlete to use for a “short chute” (a shortcut on the course), adding another layer of excitement.

Athletes have to earn the right to profit from a short chute. They can do so by being the first to cross the Mount Line at the end of the transition area after their first swim and bike. The second way is to cross the Dismount Line at the start of the transition area in first place on the first run.

Spectator-Friendly Courses

The courses are compact and multi-lap, allowing spectators to see the athletes multiple times and stay close to the action.

How much is the Supertri prize money?

The winning team earns $350,000, the second pockets $250,000, third wins $150,000 and fourth takes home $100,000.

The five highest placed men and women in the individual standings win between $50,000 to $10,0000. After each round, the first five finishers win between $15,000 and $1,000

The winners of the Swim, Bike and Run Leagues also receive $3,000.

What happened in the Supertri League 2024?

New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde and Great Britain’s Georgia Taylor-Brown claimed the men’s and women’s titles in a dramatic 2024 Supertri League season.

The 2024 season delivered fast-paced, unpredictable racing in London, Boston, Chicago and Toulouse before the grand finale in NEOM, Saudi Arabia.

Hayden Wilde performed consistently and powerfully with tactical acumen in the short-format discipline, securing crucial victories and podium finishes.

He went head-to-head with British Olympic gold medallist Alex Yee in several races. Their sprint finishes became a highlight of the series.

While Yee claimed a memorable victory in the season finale in NEOM, Wilde’s regular high placings throughout the series clinched the overall championship.

Three in a row for Taylor-Brown

Georgia Taylor-Brown‘s journey to her third Supertri League title stemmed from her resilience and strategic racing.

She delivered a standout performance in front of a home crowd in London, taking a thrilling victory.

French star Cassandre Beaugrand provided formidable opposition in a season mixed with triumph and tribulation, including a shock disqualification in Toulouse. However, she finished the season on a high with a commanding win in NEOM.

Despite this, Taylor-Brown’s consistency across the five-race series was enough to secure her the overall women’s title.

Crown Racing crowned

In the team competition, Crown Racing, led by Wilde and Taylor-Brown, were dominant.

Their astute use of the “short chute” advantage and high scores from all team members saw them amass the most points throughout the series, earning them the Supertri League Team Champions title.

Supertri racing got underway on 26 July in Toronto, Canada, where Alex Yee won the men’s race in his first triathlon of 2025. Jolien Vermeylen triumphed in the women’s race on her Supertri debut.

On the calendar so far are:

  • 23 August : Chicago, USA
  • 21 September: Jersey, British Isles
  • 5 October: Toulouse, France

Further dates and locations for the league are expected to be announced soon.

By Supertri, the mass participation arm of the company, has expanded this year. An amateur race will take place in Toulouse on the same day as the professional event.

How long does a super-sprint triathlon take?

In terms of total distance, Supertri is not dissimilar to super-sprint except that in the latter you complete the swim, bike and run distances in one go not in stages.

A super sprint triathlon is the shortest and most accessible distance in the sport, making it an excellent entry point for beginners.

The time it takes to complete one can vary significantly based on an individual’s fitness level, experience, and the specific course conditions.

A standard super sprint triathlon consists of the following distances:

  • Swim: 400 meters
  • Bike: 10 kilometers (6.2 miles)
  • Run: 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles)

Here’s a rough breakdown of what to expect.

Elite triathletes competing at the highest level can complete a super sprint distance in an astonishingly short time, often well under 30 minutes. Their transitions are a blur, and their speed in each discipline is world-class.
