Sunski Couloir review: quality running sunglasses with a quirky way to cut glare

Lateral sun shields make these sunglasses from the San Francisco outdoor brand excellent for running in bright light.

220 Triathlon Verdict

Good-looking sunnies with eco-credentials and nice features, but for running and casual use more than tri. Score: 80%

Pros

  • Brilliant glare reduction
  • Lots of lens options
  • Recycled materials
  • Comfy on the trails

Cons

  • Sun shields limit peripheral vision
  • You can’t store them on your head

Whisper it… The sunny days are coming..! Yes, at the time of writing I’ve had what feels like months of endless grey and rain, but the odd sunny day is starting to creep in. So it’s the perfect time to start thinking ahead to running sunglasses.

New to 220, Sunski are a San Francisco-based eyewear brand focussing on outdoor designs. I turned my attention to the Couloir first.

The design works well as a daily set of sunnies as it’s not too overtly ‘sporty’ with square lenses and a traditional frame shape. I tried out the black frame with mirrored blue lenses shown here, but these come in five colourways with a mix of mirrored and non-mirrored options.

Unconventional anti-glare feature

Uniquely, these have a curved sun shield on each side designed to reduce side glare (mainly in snowy conditions). These move so you can fold the glasses and stay in place with tiny magnets. They’re also removable if you prefer them without.

The diffused light at the sides worked well on a bright sunny morning run, though I wouldn’t choose these as cycling sunglasses due to the loss of peripheral vision.

With a carbon neutral supply chain and members of 1% for the Planet the frames are made from 100% Superlight Recycled Polycarbonate. They come with a cardboard box and soft bag with no plastic packaging.

Bottom line

In use they were comfortable and lightweight and I enjoyed wearing these for trail runs. They don’t sit well on top of the head though and tended to slide off. So bear this in mind if you take your sunnies off a lot when the sun goes in and need somewhere to put them.
