Competition heating up for Abu Dhabi Triathlon

Van Lierde, Llanos and Butterfield among those racing long course

While the Brownlee brothers grabbed headlines recently with the news they will be racing the ‘short course’ at this year’s Abu Dhabi Triathlon, there are plenty of big names lining up for the 223km long course, including 2013 Ironman World Champion Frederik Van Lierde.

Other big-name athletes confirmed for the 15 March event include Eneko Llanos (ESP), Tyler Butterfield (BER), James Cunnama (RSA) and Per Bittner (GER). The long course will involve a 3km swim in the waters off Abu Dhabi’s public beach, followed by a 200km bike to Yas Island and around the Yas Marina F1 circuit, followed by a 20km run back to the city centre.

The Brownlees meanwhile will be racing in the short course, which follows a similar route and involves a 1.5km swim, 100km cycle and 10km run. Older brother Alistair won the event last year with a time of 3:20:18, while this year’s event will see younger brother Jonny make his debut in long-distance triathlon racing.
