Rudy Project Zuma

Rudy’s mid-price 252g melon protector isn’t the coolest or most protective, but it’s a snug, stylish fit with a quality feel for the money.

Our small to medium sample is definitely on the small side, perching on top of your head rather than extending lower round your skull.

The dial-adjust cradle means it’s not going to wobble off, though, and it also keeps weight right down. The little half-turn strap tensioners work fine and there’s a removable beard guard to keep your goatee from getting eaten.

The perched fit means plenty of exposed head to cool, as do its 26 vents. Trumpet-shaped exhaust ports suck more air off the back of your bonce than you’d expect, too. The silver ‘pillow’ pads tend to hold a fair amount of sweat as you heat up, so be sure to wash them regularly.

Long-term prospects are good as the hardshell wraps right round the back of the helmet for scuff/drop protection. This all helps to lift the Zuma to an above-average performance for the price.
