Rapha Classic Softshell

Style matched by substance. If you have the cash, then why not...

The Classic first hit the UK back in 2005 and has remained almost the same since, albeit with a few ever-so subtle tweaks.

It’s a slim fit, but its 10% spandex composition ensures enough movement to not feel restrictive. It defies the cold and wind manfully, while breathability is good, if a tad clammy on aggressive gradients.

Showers bead off well and it handles downpours better than most, while the close-fitting neck, elasticated cuffs and drawcord waist seal you in nicely.

Neat touches include a butt-flap that folds away inside the jacket; cuff extensions that sneak beneath your gloves for a draught-free finish; and a left shoulder pad for supporting bags.

The only gripe concerns the rear pockets. Three open and one zipped are great for storage (also one zipped upfront), but they’re uncomfortably high up. Good for shoulder exercises, but not ideal on the fly.
