Oman to host Ironman 70.3 World Championship in 2029
The announcement comes alongside the launch of the Middle East’s first full-distance Ironman, as Oman looks to cement its reputation as an endurance hub.
The Middle East will host an Ironman World Championship for the first time after Muscat was named as the venue for the 2029 Ironman 70.3 World Championship.
The city on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula will also stage the region’s first full-distance Ironman, with the 140.6-mile event scheduled for December next year.
A new partnership between Ironman and Experience Oman, the promotional arm of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, will also see the existing Ironman 70.3 Muscat in February elevated in status to become the Ironman 70.3 Middle East Championship.
In addition, Experience Oman will become the first title sponsor of the 18-race Ironman Pro Series, helping secure the future of the $4m competition.
Ironman CEO Scott DeRue said: “We’re thrilled to partner with Experience Oman to offer world-class race experiences in the region and showcase the incredible beauty, culture, and history of Oman.”
The deal represents one of the largest sports tourism investments Oman has ever made and his Excellency Azzan bin Qassim Al Busaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism for Tourism, emphasised the national importance of the agreement.
He said: “Hosting such international events reflects the Sultanate’s readiness to accommodate major global competitions and contributes to diversifying tourism offerings while attracting new segments of visitors from around the world.”
What to expect from the Ironman 70.3 worlds in Oman
The 2029 Ironman 70.3 World Championship is expected to attract more than 6,000 athletes from across the globe and Muscat, framed by the Gulf of Oman and the Al Hajar Mountains, promises an unforgettable backdrop for world-class competition.
The capital combines Arabian culture, bustling souqs and historic forts with natural beauty ranging from desert dunes to turquoise waters.
Athletes can expect a course that weaves through this heritage: a warm sea swim, a rolling bike leg past landmarks such as the Royal Opera House and Al Bustan Palace, and a city-centre run finishing near Al Qurum beach.
Triathlon grows in Oman
Oman’s journey with Ironman began in 2018 with a 5150 Olympic-distance event in Muscat, followed a year later by the inaugural Ironman 70.3 Muscat.
Since then, the sport has grown steadily in the Sultanate, with Ironman 70.3 Salalah first staged in 2022 and now held annually, including its next edition on 25 October 2025.
While triathlon now takes centre stage, Oman is no stranger to endurance sport. The country has already hosted several major events, including UTMB trail running qualifiers that attracted international fields.
DeRue believes the move will resonate with triathletes globally. He added: “This exciting partnership marks a new chapter as we grow our presence in the region and, through our inspiring and life-changing experiences, bring the rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality of Oman to our athletes worldwide.”
How can you qualify for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship?
Ironman offers a set number of qualification spots per race for its Ironman and Ironman 70.3 events, under a new qualification system announced in July.
Marbella in Spain is the host destination for this year’s Ironman 70.3 worlds in November and the qualification window has already closed.
Athletes looking to compete in the Ironman 70.3 worlds before 2029 have the option of trying to qualify for Nice (2026 and 2028), with the 2027 edition expected to be in a as yet unannounced location in North America.
