Triathlon legend Lucy Gossage wins 2025 Spine Race
Triathlete and cancer doctor Lucy Gossage takes on the brutal Spine Race for a second time and wins the women's race

The former pro triathlete and cancer doctor Lucy Gossage has won the women’s event at the 2025 Spine Race in brutal conditions.
On her second time taking at the infamous Spine Race, the former pro and icon of the sport battled through snow and ice to conquer the event.
Taking over her Instagram account, fellow triathlete Nikki Bartlett shared the news in the early hours of this morning (Thursday 16th Jan), letting her followers know that Lucy completed the race in 87 hours and 41 minutes.
“You’ve only gone and WON THE SPINE race!!! 87hours and 41mins and 268miles later. You’re literally my hero in every sense. I know this will be the icing on the cake for you Goss.”

Conquering the mountains
The Spine Race is one of the toughest running races in the world. Taking on 268 miles of the Pennine Way in the harshest months of winter, the organisers describe it as an opportunity to “experience the full ferocity and magnitude of this iconic route. These races will test everything about yourself and more”.
Nikki Bartlett continues: “It’s been an absolute privilege literally living on my phone, and taking over Goss’s social media. I can’t put into words how much this absolute gem of a person means to us.
“I will let Goss in time write her post race post. Thank you Goss for being a hero to so many people. For me personally, thank you for being a best friend, you’ve helped guide me in my life in many ways, in my Pro career, and also to try and be a better person each day, and follow my heart in life.”
Lucy had very personal reasons for returning to the mountains which you can read about in her own words in this blog post.
Lucy had to draw in and overtake early leader Robyn Cassidy to claim her place on the podium, and in extremely difficult conditions. Lucy obviously enjoyed the experience for all its hardship. “When I caught Robin I knew I had her, we were both running my race.”
Sleep had been Lucy’s achilles heel in the 2024 race making the latter stages of the race a wearing grind.
This time she mastered her sleep monsters and arrived at the finish line fresh enough to leap in the air after touching the wall!

Inspirational athlete
Lucy Gossage is a cancer doctor by profession, but aged 35 took the decision to take some time out to become a professional triathlete.
Inspiring others with her enthusiasm for the sport and iconic ‘Duracell Bunny’ energy levels she won multiple Ironman races and became a 14x Ironman champion, as well as winning the iconic Norseman Xtri World Championship race.
Returning to medicine full-time in 2020 Gossage turned to Ultra racing and she came third in the 2024 Spine Race. This year’s second attempt saw her take that amazing win and also continue to raise money for a charity which she co-founded: Move Against Cancer.
Including gift aid, her 2024 race raised £37K for the charity. So far this year her total stands at £14K and you can donate at the link here.
In the men’s race, Kim Collison won in 82hrs, 46mins which is now the third fastest men’s time.
