Indurain to compete in ITU relay

Legendary cyclist Miguel Indurain will participate in the cycling leg of a triathlon relay this weekend at the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series race in Madrid

Legendary cyclist Miguel Indurain will test if his cycling skills are still up to scratch in Madrid’s Caso De Campo park, as he takes part in a triathlon event at the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series race in the Spanish Capital.

The five-time Tour de France winner will participate in the cycling leg of a triathlon relay this weekend. The 6 foot 2 inch “Big Mig”, as he is affectionately known, will hope to get some helpful advice from fellow countrymen and triathlon sensations Javier Gomez and Ivan Rana, as he gets ready to pit his skills against thousands of other participants in the age-group competition.

“Triathlon is a formidable and spectacular sport and I am delighted to be one of the guests at the Casa de Campo in Madrid for this impressive day of world championship action,” said Indurain.

“Miguelón” as he is also known, was the first man ever to win the Tour de France on five consecutive occasions. Indurain is racing as a part of the Laureus team to raise funds for their international development projects. The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation was announced as the official charity partner of the International Triathlon Union at the opening round of the series in Sydney last April.

“It is great to be able to watch so many great athletes and to meet the triathletes from the Laureus team who will be taking part. I know they all will enjoy a wonderful and challenging day, and more importantly they will do so much good by raising funds for the vital work that Laureus does.”

During his years at the top, Indurain was known as one of the best time trialists in the world, taking Olympic Gold at the first time Olympic time trial at the Atlanta Summer Games in 1996. He’s hoping that his speed on the bike will give his team an advantage as they take to the stunning course that overlooks the Spanish capital. However it’s not all about winning for the champion.

“I hope all the triathletes in the field and the spectators will understand a little more now of what Laureus does for disadvantaged young people around the world, which is why our partnership with the International Triathlon Union is so important. This is something in which I believe passionately, and I am delighted that this major world event in my country can play its part.”
