Prestwold Airfield in Loughborough launches British elite season on Sunday

The 2012 British Elite Duathlon Championships take place this Sunday 25 March at Prestwold Airfield in Loughborough, kick starting this year’s elite multisport calendar.

Last year’s event saw the 2011 GE British Triathlon Male Elite Duathlete of the Year, Mark Buckingham, take the win, narrowly beating Todd Leckie.

In the 2011 women’s event, it was an equally close run affair with Non Stanford beating Gillian Saunders by just three seconds. Non isn’t racing this weekend, but there is still a strong senior women’s field including Lucy Gossage, Elinor Thorogood and Lucy Smith.

The event also includes the British Elite Duathlon Youth and Junior Championships, the first race of the 2012 British Triathlon Youth and Junior Super Series.

In the junior women’s race, George Schwiening will be one to watch after a successful season in 2011 where she was part of the GE Great Britain Team that won silver in the duathlon mixed relay event at the 2011 Gijon ITU Duathlon World Championships.

The seniors and juniors will race over a 5km run, 20km bike and 2.5km run, while the youth athletes will race over 2.5km, 10km bike and 1.25km run.
