Ironman Nice cancelled due to soaring temperatures in Europe

Ironman have notified athletes that amid soaring temperatures in France this weekend’s 70.3 and full-distance events will not go ahead.

Scheduled to take place on Sunday 28th June, athletes were given the news yesterday. An official statement on the Ironman website read:

“Due to a decision by the Alpes-Maritimes Prefecture following extreme heat conditions and the extension of the heatwave alert, the Ramify IRONMAN France Nice and IRONMAN 70.3 Nice races scheduled for 28 June have been cancelled.”

The weather forecast for race day predicted temperatures of up to 31°C by early afternoon (source: BBC Weather).

Wellbeing a priority

A longer message on Facebook stated:

“Due to a decision by the Alpes-Maritimes Prefecture following extreme heat conditions and the extension of the heatwave alert, the Ramify IRONMAN France Nice and IRONMAN 70.3 Nice races scheduled for 28 June have been cancelled. We know how much this start line means to our athletes, and we share your disappointment.

“The safety and wellbeing of athletes, volunteers, staff, and the wider community will always remain our top priority. IRONMAN and the City of Nice are now working together on next steps and possible solutions for affected athletes. Further updates will be shared as soon as they are confirmed. Thank you for your understanding, patience, and continued support.”
