Aileen Reid was named Irish Athlete of the Year at the Triathlon Ireland Awards Dinner last weekend, in recognition of a standout season which culminated in silver at the WTS Grand Final in London last September.

The award was voted on by members of Triathlon Ireland, and was presented at an evening ceremony in Dublin's Aviva Stadium last Saturday (2 November) in front of nearly 300 elite and age-group athletes, family and friends.

Anne O'Leary, CEO of sponsors Vodafone Ireland, said: "We all stood in admiration of Aileen’s stunning performance in London. To show the courage to go back to the same course where her Olympic hopes were dashed last year and secure silver in the World Triathlon Series Grand Final was amazing."

Other award winners included age-groupers Kevin Thornton from Belpark TC in Dublin and Anna Crooks from GoTri TC in Clare, while Con Doherty was named Junior Athlete of the Year.
