2013 GB elite squad announced

Gossage in 2013 team

British Triathlon has confirmed support for multisport athletes including ETU Powerman European Duathlon Champion, Lucy Gossage, former ITU Duathlon World Champion, Katie Hewison and ITU Cross Triathlon World Champion, Lesley Patterson.

The British Triathlon Elite Multisport Squad comprises nine athletes aiming to compete in international duathlon and triathlon events during 2013. Professional ambassadors also include 2012 Ironman World Champion, Leanda Cave.

Gossage, Hewison and Paterson are joined by experienced international duathletes, Phil Wylie and Matt Moorhouse. Mark Threlfall and Oli Mott complete the senior squad.

Gossage combines training for long distance duathlon and triathlon with work as an oncology doctor and clinical research fellow at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute and is profiled in issue April’s 220 Triathlon, out 5th March.

She commented: “I’m really pleased to have been included in the Elite Multisport Squad. Last year was a huge step forward for me, and having the additional support this year can only help me.

“My season plan is still taking shape, but it’s definitely going to include the ETU European Duathlon in Horst in April.”
Promising juniors, Richard Horton and George Schwienning will also be supported. Horton took up duathlon only last year, winning the British Junior Duathlon Championships to mark his debut. He went on to win the Junior European and World titles.

Schwienning, who trains with Gossage in Cambridge, was also a silver medallist at the ITU Duathlon World Junior Championships.
Ironman World Champion, Leanda Cave, will be a professional long distance ambassador along with Rachel Joyce and Tom Lowe.
Simon Mills from British Triathlon said: “We’re pleased to be able to support athletes through the Elite Multisport Squad.

Many of the squad are current or former world champions, and others have the potential to achieve the highest level of international success. “Great Britain has an excellent track record in multisport and long distance events, and these athletes will receive support towards training and medical costs as well as coaching through training camps and international events.”
