ON Cloudracer 2 running shoes

Fast race trainers thanks to their featherweight design, but the mesh-like upper means they're definitely one for the summer

Last October Frederik van Lierde strode to Ironman Hawaii victory in these smart-looking Cloudracer 2s. On’s USP is the network of outsole lugs, designed to absorb impact before returning that energy with interest for greater propulsion. Those lugs remain – 18 of them – though they’re subtler than previous incarnations.

They still provide a good ride but, like Ons we’ve tested before, they take bedding-in to lose stiffness between landing and toe-off. The major tweak is the redesigned upper, which now features bands of material that strap your feet in place. It’s hard to quantify a significant difference with the original but our feet certainly felt stable on interval training sets.

A wide, wafer-thin tongue adds comfort, while its featherweight mass signals its audience: a race shoe designed for athletes running 4min/km. They’re a fine shoe for racing and biomechanically efficient runners, though not designed for UK winter, as the mesh-like upper barely withstands a shower.
