Inov-8 X-Talon 212

Inov-8 shoes are great for off-road running. Try the Roclite 315 for non-technical trails or the Mudclaw 330 for the filthy stuff. But if it’s a lightweight shoe for summer fell races you’re after, then the X-Talon 212 ticks all the right boxes. Weighing in at 212g, it’s like a ballet shoe with 4 x 4 capabilities.

The aggressive tread pattern gives amazing grip on rock, grass and mud, and inspires total confidence when descending. Without any mid-sole to speak of, your foot hugs the ground, minimising the risk of a turned ankle. This lack of cushioning does make the shoe unsuitable for the road, although for short sections the rubber studs do give a certain amount of spring. Caveat: spend too much time on tarmac and you’ll soon wear the soft rubber down.

This is an out-and-out aggressive off-road racer, so if you’re thinking of doing Helvellyn or the Coniston Triathlon, it’s the shoe for you.
