Asics Gel-Tarther

This classic-looking race flat is the first time we’ve seen a Japanese-specific creation from the Asics shoe guru, Hitoshi Mimura, in Europe.

It’s a simple affair, lacking the bells and whistles that we’ve come to expect from modern running super brands, but without any loss of quality or basic functionality. What remain are lightweight and high-quality shoes that inspire confidence, even over longer distances.

The Duosole outsole is surprisingly aggressive and makes easy work of all but the gnarliest of surfaces or winter conditions. The toe box is particularly well formed and, although the upper structure and materials are fairly traditional, there’s no noticable rubbing or seam irritation.

For beginners or heel strikers, however, the minimal cushioning and support, although not at the expense of comfort, has clearly been developed for the more accomplished forefoot runner.
