Shimano RS80

Shimano first started using superlight alloy rims with a reinforcing layer of carbon fused on top on its non-aero Dura Ace wheels. The fact you’re now getting similar light, but extremely strong, performance at £400 is a big value bonus.

While relatively heavy hubs mean overall weight isn’t particularly low, it’s definitely not slow. Sixteen front and 20 rear spokes – plus the light rim – make for immediate acceleration from the first pedal stroke.

Extra carbon reinforcement round the rim eyelets and direct insertion for the spokes mean no hint of warp or yaw even when being sprinted by our largest testers.

Shimano’s legendary well-sealed labyrinth hubs with bearings provide silk smooth, self serviceable rolling performance at the centre. Add the best QRs in the business and it’s looking like a real contender for the wheel to beat in 2009.
