Who are you aimed at and how many members are there?
Absolute Triathlon Club was launched in April 2009 and now has over 100 members. Our club is very family orientated and we have a sizeable junior section with just under 40 members and we are keen to encourage families to train together. Being a new club we have attracted a lot of people totally new to triathlon, seeing them complete their first race is fantastic and everyone is so supportive of one another. We also have a real mix of distances and a few age-groupers, the new Outlaw race in Nottingham has certainly convinced some of our members to train for long distance this year.
What training sessions do you organise each week?
We have a mix of sessions across the week including two coached swim sessions, two run sessions, a Sunday morning bike ride split in to two ability groups and a Junior club every Sunday afternoon. During the summer we have open water sessions at Holme Pierrepont. We also hold a number of other sessions such as a women only bike ride every month plus standalone sessions such as bike handling, transition training, nutrition and underwater swimming analysis We are hoping to add more swim sessions shortly.
What are some of your members’ finest results?
Coach Steve Lloyd qualified this year for the European Championships in Athlone 2010, Tri Star Ailsa Turner won three out of three Junior triathlons this year, and Chloe Barton, 15, came seventh in the Inter Regional Championships this year. We also has a number of very promising novices winning their age groups; as 80% of our adults and nearly all our juniors were beginners we are extremely proud of everyone who did their first triathlon in 2009.
What social events are there on the club’s calendar?
Last year we had a great end of season awards night at the local golf club celebrating the achievements of our members. In 2010 we have a number of events planned including an Open Water Junior Triathlon at Holme Pierrepont, a visit to the Manchester Velodrome, a number of races that we take our club marquee along to, a weekend camping at Top Barn Farm in Worcester plus some women only events planned. We've also booked our Christmas 2010 end of season party!
Anything else you’d like to share?
We are a very friendly, well structured club with some great coaches and plenty going on. We are welcome beginners and provided you can swim 50 mtrs (it doesn't matter how!) just pop down for a free taster session - we cater for all abilities. Having specialist bike and swim coaches as well as a Level 3 tri coach means we are also able to support and develop experienced triathletes - there is something for everyone. We will be launching a second club in Worcester during Jan in partnership with Runaround Sports.
