Erox Mega 500

Having impressed us over at 220 Towers with their Quarra Extra Speed bike, the leading Swiss brand Erox is back with its Mega 500 carbon wheelset.

Despite the first use of the word ‘mega’ since 1988, this carbon wheelset is truly impressive. Spec-wise, the Mega 500s boast 55mm deep section rims, weigh in at a slender 1,390g a pair, are built with black X-ray spokes from Sapin (20 front, 24 rear) and come in at a relatively reasonable £899.99 (race wheels can set you back £2k plus, after all).

For the purposes of this test, we were using a pair of Continental tyres that were easy and super quick to take on and off. Testing the Mega 500s out on our regular sprint session, they were consistently effective – registering a constant 5mph faster over the third mile sprint (not to mention the compliments we got for the stylish design). One niggle that did arise, though, was that the bike pulled to one side in a minor crosswind.
