Simon Whitfield to carry Canadian flag at the Olympics

The 2000 Olympic champion has been chosen to carry the Canadian flag at the opening cermony in London

Simon Whitfield, the Olympic triathlon champion from Sydney in 2000, has been chosen to carry the Canadian flag at the opening cermony of the 2012 games in London.

He was officially announced as the flag bearer in a news conference yesterday at Parliament Hill, Ottawa.

Whitfield was a surprise winner of the gold medal in the first ever Olympic triathlon in Sydney, Australia, in the year 2000, he then followed that up two games later with a silver in Beijing in 2008, a result famous for Whitfield’s use of a domestique, Colin Jenkins, during the swim and bike (see the next issue of 220 for a full interview with Jenkins).
