Pros claim spots at new event

Pro triathletes Joel Jameson, Graeme Stewart, Craig Twigg and Stephen Bayliss have all signed up for the newly-announced Challenge Weymouth long-distance triathlon taking place next September.

Jameson placed second at this year’s Challenge Henley, while Twigg finished third at the 2014 National Middle Distance Championships last July.

Stewart holds the sixth-fastest British Iron-distance time ever after finishing Challenge Barcelona in 8:16hrs earlier this year, and Bayliss came a close second at Ironman UK last August.

Jameson said: “My first ever triathlon was in Weymouth – and so I am especially excited to return, and to race on some familiar roads.

“It really is the perfect location for Challenge UK, and I would like to congratulate the team on securing such an incredible destination – everybody is in for a treat.”

Next year’s event will be taking place on 14 September and will involve a long-distance race (3.8km swim/180km bike/42.2km run), as well as a half-distance race.

The organisers told 220 Triathlon earlier this week that they are “staggered” by the public response to the new location, and expect around 1,500 athletes to take part.

Entries are now open (and are selling out fast) at www.challengeweymouth.com.
