Pearl Izumi Em Road M3

Well-constructed shoe to continue Pearl's run-shoe learning curve

In the past, Pearl’s run shoe range hasn’t matched the quality of their bike offerings, but that’s changed in recent times.

Looks-wise, the M3s (318g) stand out, as does the bulky side profile that measures around 11m from heel to toe.

Within that bulk lies Pearl’s Energy Foam midsole, which is thicker than standard but compresses more for greater stress absorption. It certainly provided a springy run, just overstepping the buoyant mark in our eyes.

On the plus side, that cushioning overload doesn’t inhibit a smooth transition to toe-off, whether running long or slow, or cranking up the tempo.

It has one of the widest foot entries on test – something to note for thin-limbed athletes – but if that’s fine with you, comfort is impressive.

And you can even go sockless thanks to the seamless upper.
