Wee Triathlon race report

Action from this weekend’s event in Fort William. Cue fallen trees, athletes in ditches and swirling snow…

Over to No Fuss Events on their eventful weekend…

This weekend saw competitors from as far away as Devon enter Fort William’s ever-popular Wee Triathlon, which normally consists of a 400m pool swim, 15km on and off road cycle and a 5km run.

Normal, however, is not what we got! After some very, very high winds in the Lochaber area on Friday night, the cycle and run routes were off limits due to 1 or 2 (read 100) fallen trees blocking the way. The show went on, though, and the off-road cycle became 100% on road. Easier then? Nope, the winds were persistent and many riders were victim to it, being blown into ditches whilst battling with the swirling snow (no athletes were hurt in the process!).

But the cold weather didn’t dampen spirits and over both days we had more than 120 competitors crossing the line. In true Wee Tri style we had a great mix of first timers through to seasoned triathletes. The fastest times went to Fort William locals, Jamie Maxwell (Saturday) and Graeme Bamber (Sunday), who both came in just under an hour.

For the ladies on Saturday, it was Judy Wardlaw who took the gold, but local lady Nix Forster wasn’t far behind. On Sunday, it was Raeanne Miller from Oban who came in first – Raeanne entered the Wee Tri as a warm up for The Highland Warrior Triathlon in May, training is obviously going well.

No Fuss would like to thank all of the volunteer marshalls, the staff at Lochaber Leisure Centre and everyone who made it through the snow to get to Fort William. For full results and photos check the No Fuss website.
