The multisport race news has recently been dominated by cancellations, so it cheers us to announce some news of a new race for 2021.

Set for 31 May 2021, the Tradeinn International Triathlon 140.6 will take place near Girona, Northern Spain, and will offer €30,000 in prize money.

The race, located in the Catalan home of Ironman stars Jan Frodeno and David McNamee, will test athletes with an iron-distance course of 226km (or the titular 140.6 miles) that starts with a 3.8km sea swim at Platja d'Aro on the Costa Brava (see below).

Unknown-1

The 180km bike route then takes in Gavarres and Girona, with four key ascents to mountain passes that have featured in cycling’s Vuelta a España Grand Tour (Alto de Sant Grau, Santa Pellaia, La Ganga and Romanyà). The total elevation gain on the bike is 2,100m, relatively hilly but less than the likes of Ironman Wales (2,450m) or Ironman Lanzarote (2,508m).

The race will conclude with a marathon on the seafront of Platja d'Aro, offering four laps on the Adidas Runnerinn Course.

The organisers are expecting 3,000 entrants to the race, with the initial entry fee of just €149.99 (€199.95 between 1 November and 31 January, and €249.95 after 1 February) set to be a major draw for triathletes.

Crucially in these Covid times, the non-profit race will refund 100% of the fee if the race is cancelled due to the pandemic.

If an athlete is unable to take part in the race, TradeInn will allow their registration to be amended in three different ways:

  • Save their place until the 2022 edition.
  • Change their number within any circuit race 100×100 HALF.
  • Return a percentage of the fee (100% if cancellation is before 31/01, 50% if cancelled between 31/01 and 31/04 and 25% if cancelled between 31/04 and 15/05).

The healthy prize pot will see the first male and female finishers take away €7,000, €4,000 for second place, €2,500 for third, €1,500 for fourth and €500 for the fifth place.

The winners from any of the 12 Age Groups will also receive a €250 voucher that can be spent at any Tradeinn website. The event has already attracted Garmin, Adidas and Nutrisport as sponsors.
