Alistair Brownlee hasn't had the best luck this year, with injury and illness ruling him out of both the 2021 Ironman World Championship and his much-anticipated Sub7 attempt in June.

And it looks as though that bad luck is set to continue with the British athlete announcing on Instagram that he's going to be out for the rest of the season with injury.

"The annus horribilis continues," he writes. "Unfortunately I've got a stress fracture in my femur and won't be racing for the rest of the year.

"The last few months have been more than a little testing. But I'll do everything I can to work out what the problem is and be back training soon."

Brownlee returned to racing in July after an injury ruled him out for much of the first half of the year. He looked in great shape when competing at the PTO Canadian Open until he came unstuck with stomach issues on the run.

He subsequently lined up on the start line at Ironman 70.3 Swansea and took the win, before setting a British record in Sweden at Ironman Kalmar to secure his place at the Ironman World Championship in Kona in October.

The double Olympic gold medallist was due to race against a strong field at this weekend's PTO US Open in Dallas, but his attention now turns to recovering in the hope of a strong season in 2023.

Unfortunately, the news means we won't see Brownlee go up against the Norwegians on the Big Island, leaving Joe Skipper and David McNamee as Britain's main hopes in the men's race.
