New run-bike event for Salford

New cycling/running event makes its debut in Salford on 27 September

Sunday 27 September sees the inaugural City of Salford 10K and Salford Cycle, a cycling and running race that it is hoped will become an annual event. Note that this is not a duathlon, but rather a 10K run and a 1km cycling time trial that happen to take place on the same day. However, as the run starts at 9.30am and the time trials at 12 noon, there's certainly nothing to stop you from taking part in both – just be prepared for a much longer transition than normal!

The 10K run is open to over 15's while the time trials are divided into age groups from 12 to 40+. Both the cycle and run routes start and finish in the city's Lowry Plaza, with the run taking you past the Imperial War Museum North and the Old Trafford football ground. Salford's Mayor and Mayoress will be issuing the starter's orders, and the run is hosted jointly by Salford City Council and Sports Tours International. Sports Tours International is the events arm of bookmaker and gaming company Betfred, which was set up by Salford native Fred Done.

Nominated charities for the event include Mencap, the New Manchester Children's Hospital, the Salford Mayor's Charity Appeal, Sparks, Salford Lads & Girls Club and Inscape House (a local school for autistic children). Entrance forms can be found at www.sportstoursinternational.co.uk.
