Thomas exited the 3.8km swim in third place, behind Britain's Harry Wiltshire and Oliver Simon. He managed to wrest the lead from Germany's Markus Thomschke in the latter stages of the 180km bike, but lost it again before T2.

No matter, once on the run Thomas managed to overhaul the German around the 13.5km mark, and he crossed the line in 8:57:33. Wiltshire finished fifth.

In the women's race, Anja Beranek (GER) crossed the line more than 30mins ahead of second-placed Tineke Van Den Berg (NED). Britain's Emma Pooley placed fifth.
