Ironman South Africa has been named as the African Championships and a P4000 race (a high points race in the pro category) for 2015, and now has 75 places for Kona along with a prize purse of $150,000.

More than 2,000 athletes took part in this year's 226km race last June, won by Nils Frommhold (GER) and Simone Brändli (SUI). The event should now become even more popular as triathletes fight for their dream slot at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii.

Ironman revealed last month that it had decided to change the professional prize purse for 2015, upping total winnings to $5m and reducing the number of pro races being held in the Americas in order to create bigger pro prize purses there.
