The third and final Arena Games Triathlon will be taking place in London, UK, on Saturday 8 April, with a host of big names lining up to race.
It’ll be the third Super League Triathlon (SLT) event of the season, and the second year that SLT has partnered with World Triathlon to bring esports triathlon racing into the mainstream.
The first event in Montreal on 25 February was the first of three races over the course of six weeks. The second race travelled to Sursee, Switzerland on 12 March, before the series culminates in London on 8 April, where the 2023 esport triathlon world champions will be crowned (last year’s victors were Alex Yee and Beth Potter).
Who’s racing the Arena Games Triathlon London?
The full start list for the Arena Games Triathlon London has yet to be revealed but we’ve had a few big-name teasers. On the men’s side, Olympic hero Jonny Brownlee will be there to kick off his 2023 season as will 2022 Ironman world champion Gustav Iden.
Both top athletes are aiming for qualification to the 2024 Paris Olympics this year; for Brownlee it would be his fourth Games – and a fourth medal – while for Iden he will be hoping to usurp his compatriot and reigning Olympic champ Kristian Blummenfelt (not racing in London).
In the women’s field, Potter, fresh off her maiden WTCS victory in Abu Dhabi, will be joining last year’s London winner Cassandre Beaugrand.
The four stars can’t, however, compete for the overall title, which is decided by a best result from either of the first two events of the Series in Montreal or Switzerland plus the final.
The favourites to become the 2023 triathlon esports world champions are Chase McQueen and Henri Schoeman for the men and Gina Sereno and Zsanett Bragmayer for the women.
Fifteen-year-old sensation Fanni Szalai, who stunned the triathlon world with a podium performance in her first-ever race as an elite in Switzerland, will also race again in London.
Other British athletes taking part in London include Olivia Mathias, Kate Waugh, Dan Dixon and Jack Stanton-Stock.
What happened in Montreal and Sursee?
American couple McQueen and Sereno produced a fairy tale day at the first event of the Series in Montreal as they both stormed to victory.
The second event in Sursee, Switzerland, belonged to 2018 Commonwealth Games winner and 2016 Olympic bronze medallist Schoeman, who finished second behind McQueen in Montreal, and Bragmayer.
Where will the Arena Games Triathlon London take place?
The Arena Games Grand Finale is being held at the Aquatic Centre, in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London.
What’s the race format at the Arena Games Triathlon London?
The Grand Finale is competed over heats, a repechage and a final. Heats and repechage will see two stages, per gender, of swim, bike and run, which then determine the 10 fastest athletes who will go on to compete in the final to decide an overall victor.
That means three, short, sharp and unpredictable stages as the order of the disciplines is shuffled each time. A pursuit style start is adopted for the final stage each time they race.
The swim (200m) takes place in an Olympic-sized pool, while the bike (4km) and run (1km) legs take place on static equipment with the racing realised in the virtual world of Zwift.
