300 strong GE Great Britain Age-Group Team ready for Eilat

A GE Great Britain Age-Group Team of almost 300 triathletes travel to Israel this weekend as they look to bring home gold at the 2012 Eilat ETU Triathlon European Championships on 20 and 21 April 2012.

The standard distance race will feature 141 British athletes who will embark on a one-lap 1,500m sea swim starting from the local beach before a 40km bike and 10km run. The GE Great Britain Age-Group Team also has six returning medallist from Pontevedra including two defending champions: Caroline Whittaker (50-54) and Hilary Stevenson (65-69).

Team Manager for the standard distance team is Ian Kitchen who adds: “We have a very strong GE Great Britain Age-Group Team racing in Eilat this weekend. I have seen many of the triathletes cross the line in their respective qualifiers and I hope they can replicate that form on Saturday.”

In the sprint distance races, 152 triathletes will be racing through the 750m sea swim, 20km bike and 5km run. As with the standard distance race, there are a number of returning medallists including 11 from last year’s event including five gold medallists: Steve McKeown (40-44), Joanna Lewis (55-59), Michael Smallwood (65-69), Barry Johnson (70-74) and Barbara Walton (60-64).

The ETU Triathlon European Championships will also host elite junior, senior and paratriathlon events ensuring a large GE Great Britain Triathlon Team in Eilat, a venue that has been a regular fixture of the European race circuit since its first European Cup back in 2005.
