Following the ITU’s successful bid to see paratriathlon accepted onto the Rio 2016 Paralympic Programme, British Triathlon has opened applications for the 2011 Paratriathlon Performance Squad until 30 January 2011.

The 2010 season has been a landmark year for the sport, with the GE Great Britain Paratriathlon Team topping the ETU European and ITU World Paratriathlon Championships medal tables.

In 2011, the programme aims to build on this success and establish a performance structure that can create a world class team of paratriathletes who receive world class support, providing them with the opportunity to compete at the highest level as the sport prepares for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

The main changes to the programme from 2010 will be the creation of a Paralympic Podium Squad and Paralympic Affiliate Squad that mirrors the successful structure of the UK Sport Lottery funded British Triathlon World Class Performance Programme.

Jonathon Riall, National Paratriathlon Programme Manager is delighted that the application process is open commenting: “The 2011 programme is an exciting opportunity for paratriathletes across the country to become part of our fast growing, dynamic, and modern Paralympic sport. This year we have seen outstanding performances by our British athletes, and in 2011 we aim to continue to provide an infrastructure that enables paratriathletes to deliver medal-winning performances, as we build towards Rio 2016.”

The athletes are also looking forward to the new programme, with 2009 World and European Champion Faye McClelland adding: “With the opportunity to now race at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, it’s great to see British Triathlon developing the infrastructure needed to continue delivering medal winning performances. With a world class support team and structure in place, the athletes competing in Rio will be best placed to replicate the success that the British athletes will be aiming for in London 2012.”
