The British Duathlon Championships took place last weekend, with over 800 competitors all racing to win the coveted British titles at the Dambuster Duathlon on Saturday 10 March 2012.

In the women’s race, Anna Turvey (30-34) crossed the line first after overcoming a two-minute deficit going into T1. Anna battled back through the 42km bike, before leading the women’s field out of T2. The final result came down to a sprint finish between herself and Amy Forshaw, which Anna won by just four seconds in 02:11.12. In third place was Louise Bardsley who finished in 02:12.10.

The result gets Anna’s 2012 season successfully underway, and continues her form from 2011. The 32-year-old from Newcastle (and a former 220’s Me and My Bike star) came third overall in the 2011 Limerick ETU Duathlon European Championships.

In the men’s race, Phil Mosely (35-39) celebrated crossing the line first with a winning time of 01:54.13. Phil stuck with a lead group of six duathletes during the initial 10km run recording a personal best over the distance. As the group came into T1, Phil had a great transition and then led the field into the Rutland countryside to hold his lead all the way to the finish.

In second place, was Paul Carroll (40-44) in a time of 01:55.39 and in third was last year’s runner-up Hugh Mackenzie (30-34) in 01:56.12. Despite not crossing the line first, both duathletes claimed their respective age-group titles, ensuring there was plenty to celebrate at the first British Championships of the year.

The event was also the first of three qualifiers for the GE Great Britain Age-Group Team at the 2012 Nancy ITU Duathlon World Championships in September. The second is at the Oulton Park Duathlon on 25 March before the final qualifier on 15 April at the Cambridge Duathlon.?
