A new top dog just joined Garmin's range of bike computers, combining features already found in the Edge Touring and Edge 810 models with a large high-res colour touchscreen display, smartphone connectivity and challenging segment features.

The Edge 1000 also offers instant uploads to social media, live tracking, on-the-go upload and download of data from Garmin Connect, and bike-specific navigation. Its segment capabilities let riders view start and finish point alerts, race themselves or the segment leader, and plan rides using segments.

Available in early May from £439, it includes an ambient light sensor for riding at night (or through tunnels), and will be compatible with ANT+ sensors, including heart-rate, and Garmin’s new cadence and speed sensors, the latter of which is designed to track speed and distance when GPS is not available. Battery life is claimed to be up to 15hrs.

The Edge 1000 is also compatible with the new Edge Remote, which allows riders to easily control their bike computer without removing their hands from the handlebar, as well as Shimano Di2 electronic shifting systems to display current gear on the screen, and ANT+ power meters including Vector.
