Swiss brand On has only been on the market since 2010 but is already available in 25 countries. The growth’s been stimulated by a range of shoes built on their unique outsole that features a number of lugs designed to land ‘cushioned’ but push off with all the power of running barefoot.

The Cloudster builds upon that solid foundation thanks to an upper that’s very comfortable. The marketing says ‘it’s an innovative four-way stretch material that adapts to your foot in all directions, allowing your toes to splay out if needed’.

Now, we’re happy for our feet to remain relatively stable when knocking out a 10-miler but its tactile feel – like neoprene to the touch – certainly adds comfort. Like all Ons we’ve tried, it takes a few runs to break the lugs in, but you’re soon running efficiently and at speed.

Our only minor gripe is the size of those lugs can become a magnet to small stones, especially if you venture off-road. But overall they’re a fine all-round pair of shoes for training and racing.

Verdict: Very comfortable and efficient shoe for all distances, 84%
